Endovenous Laser Ablation ( EVLA)
A minimally invasive procedure
Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of varicose veins and has been used very successfully in the USA and Australia since early 2000.
EVLA involves closure of incompetent (abnormal) veins which are the large veins of thigh and leg. The Laser cause closure of the vein from inside by heat generated by laser energy.
EVLA involves a combination of laser and ultrasound technology and does not usually require admission to hospital.
Preparing for EVLA
- is important not to schedule a long distance trip (more than 4 hours) within 4 weeks of the procedure.
- Aspirin and/clopidogrel or any other blood thinner medications can be continued but please advise the doctor of this on commencing – you will have a little more bruising but it is much safer to continue these medications.
- is recommended that you take the day off work on the treatment day.
- On the day of your treatment, do not apply moisturiser to your legs.
- Please get somebody to drive you back home (or arrange a taxi ) after the procedure.
- sometimes you may be given a sedative before the procedure, in which case you cannot drive after taking the sedative meds for a day.

Physical Activity
You will be asked to go for a 30 minute walk immediately after the procedure, and you will then need to have at least 30 minute of walk every day.
You should also avoid strenuous physical activity, such as aerobics, weight lifting or running, for 2 weeks after your treatment.
Most occupations may be resumed two days after EVLA procedure, but for heavy manual occupations, prolonged standing and heavy leg use may need 3-5 days off work.
Travel
You must avoid any flights of more than 4 hours duration for 4 weeks after your treatment.
If travel is unavoidable, you should start anticoagulation before departure. You should discuss any such travel arrangements with the doctor.
